This is Mika Nakashima’s 16th single (and her 1st using the stage name NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA) and it was released on August 31, 2005. The single reached #1 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 444,067 copies. The first 2 tracks were used in the live action movie version of the manga NANA, where Nakashima played the lead role of Nana Oosaki in the film.

I have been a fan of Mika Nakashima since the release of her Hi no Tori single in 2004 so I was extrememly surprised when I first heard GLAMOROUS SKY. This is her first full-blown rock song and it is actually very good. The electric guitar riffs are relentless and this is actually a very upbeat song. Nakashima’s voice does seem suitable for the rock genre but I still prefer her original jazzy ballad voice. It’s a good thing she incorporates her sultry vocals into this song without any drastic changes. The song was composed by Hyde of L’Arc~en~Ciel and written by Ai Yazawa, the creator of the NANA manga.

The good thing about this single is that it includes 3 B-sides. MY MEDICINE is completely in English and Nakashima’s vocals aren’t that bad. She has pronounciation problems (most J-pop artists do anyway) but the lyrics are really good. I was very relieved to find no grammar mistakes in the lyrics.

The next 2 B-sides just kind of flew by for me. I didn’t really like BLOOD but I do give it points for being a dark rock song with sinister riffs.

The final B-side is similar but BLOOD but even better. ISOLATION features excellent vocals and electric guitar riffs. Out of all the songs on this single, this one has the most depressing lyrics.
