This is Koda Kumi’s 32nd single and it was released on July 26, 2006. The single reached #2 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 390,685 copies.
NOTE: This is a review of the CD+DVD edition which includes extra tracks.
After a short introduction, the first song on this quadruple A-side single is the rockish and eye-popping Ningyo Hime. I believe that this is Kumi’s first song to have a complete rock arrangement and it’s pretty good. Her vocals are more loud and brazen and they sort of match the theme of the song. The chorus is the focal point of the song, where Kumi does try to ‘yell’ to an extent but she still keeps that familiar pop quality of her voice.
In the next track, I’ll be there, Kumi sings along to a mid-tempo acoustic guitar arrangement. I did find the acoustics to be really nice and the chorus is pretty catchy. The vocals are laid back as well and this quite an relaxing song compared to the furious riffs of Ningyo Hime.
After the interlude, the next track is JUICY, my favorite song off this single. I love the heavy bass beats and Kumi’s sultry vocals too. This song is classic Koda Kumi, complete with moaning sound effects and the like. The sex factor of the song is increased even more when Kumi says You make me hot repeatedly during the bridge.
This quadruple A-side single couldn’t be complete without an upbeat pop song and that’s exactly what With your smile is. It’s pretty much the same as her previous pop efforts, but better in my opinion. The outroduction has the same melody of With your smile and after about a minute of silence, the single ends with a music sampling of Ningyo Hime.
