This is Anna Tsuchiya’s 9th single and it was released on September 10, 2008. The single reached #39 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 3,005 copies. The title track was used as the theme song for the Japanese broadcast of the show The L Word.

UGH, THIS SONG IS SO DUMB. Virgin Cat is all kinds of stupid and not the good kind of stupid…just stupid stupid. There are so many things about this song that bug me but the 3 worst offenders are as follows:

  1. The annoying, childlike vocals. The “meow!” at the end was the final nail in the coffin for me.
  2. The non sensible lyrics. The song is full of them. “Virgin cat” is obviously a cheap euphemism for you-know-what.
  3. The music is awful. It’s a boring mix between pop and some funky retro crap. In the end, it sounds very lazy and drab. She’s done better in the pop realm with songs like BUBBLE TRIP and Crazy World.

And one more thing…
Anna, GO BACK TO ROCK MUSIC. NOW.

Fortunately, she does exactly that with Imitation night, a dramatic rock ballad that also utilizes some strings to pump up the epic factor. Why this song isn’t an A-side is beyond me because it is WAY better than Virgin Cat in about every single aspect.

The LAVA Remix of Virgin Cat is considerably better than the original but only because it features a totally different sound (the vocals are still annoying). It features a relaxing lounge club atmosphere that mostly comprises of jazzy instruments and brass.

  1. I agree. Virgin Cat was awful. It’s just so, so…

  2. I new by the Title it was gonna be stupid lol.

I laughed at your review ^^

  3. haha Lex . For this song you have to listen to it if you’re not in a serious mood . Or else it will cheese you off like seriously which’s pretty evident haha

  4. ^ LOL. But even then, it’s still a really stupid song.

  5. haha I know what you mean but ah well . Anna’s the 1 who wrote the lyrics for Virgin Cat so you probably should shoot her for writing it to begin with lmao . She didn’t write Imitation night though . Someone by the name of Kiyomi Uematsu wrote it & like yourself I so agree with you that Imitation night’s great . Too bad it didn’t make the cut in her upcoming 3rd album NUDY SHOW ! :(

  6. I knew it was gonna suck when I saw the special formatting just for this review.
    =D
I never have even listened to it.

  7. i agree too… it seemed weird. =[

  8. THANK YOU. Everyone I’ve seen is all “OMG VIRGIN CAT ROCKS!!!111!” I’m glad to see someone else who sees the song for what it is: crap.

Imitation night was the saving grace of this single <3

  9. Meh Virgin Cat is one of her best songs out lately!
It doesn’t has deep emotional lyrics but it’s a funny pop song and it’s very enjoyable.

  10. Anna sucks now. She needs to go back to the rock and stop these lame ass attempts at pop music. She hasn’t had a good single in ages. I completely agree with your review.

  11. I can’t stop laughing!
I must say though that Anna definitely Virgin Cat her own. The music was produced by Pharsed Differently, the same group who did Kumi’s FREAKY.
At least Kuroi Namida ~deep saddness~ is on NUDY SHOW!

  12. […] Anna Tsuchiya – Virgin Cat […]
