4. again ~Instrumental~

This is YUI’s 14th single and it was released on June 3, 2009. The single reached #1 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 148,679 copies. The title track was used as the first opening theme song for the anime Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

It’s been kind of a hit and miss with YUI’s last couple of releases but she is once again in full force with again. Let’s just say that her short hiatus worked wonders for her! Completely ditching that dreary alternative nonsense, again is aggressive, blunt, and forceful rock. It’s also her most dynamic song in quite a while thanks to fast paced vocals and an relentless arrangement. The song is a big improvement and a step in the right direction. Nice job, YUI!

The B-side is excellent as well. Sea is a mid-tempo song that makes use of a relaxing string section next to the familiar acoustics and drums. YUI gives one of her best vocal performances in this song because she keeps her voice nice and controlled. There’s no screechy crooning here like in SUMMER SONG (thank goodness). Anyway, it’s a really pretty track and I like it just as much, if not more than the A-side.

The YUI acoustic version of SUMMER SONG felt a little unnecessary to me. The original was “acoustic” enough as it is so you’re just getting an extra dose of it here. On a side note, I never got a summer vibe from this song. It’s too lazy for the summer.

  1. Yui’s awesome. Nice review! I have yet to hear this song though…

  2. LOVED “again”. Her best single in a while.
