1. Shizuka na Yoru (静かな夜)
2. weather

This is Kaori Mochida’s 3rd single and it was released on July 29, 2009. The single reached #20 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 4,331 copies.

Kaori Mochida quietly made her reappearance as a solo artist with Ame no Waltz and she’s back with some more laid back goodness. I gotta say that I like Shizuka na Yoru despite its overall drowsy atmosphere. The song has a sleepy introduction that features Mochida’s gentle vocals with a simple piano. It’s after the first chorus that the song picks up and when it does, it sounds pretty. The string arrangement is splendid and very soothing to the ears, much like everything else that follows. The ending was another highlight thanks to the adlibbing.

The second A-side has a cheery feel to it. In weather, the arrangement is more upbeat and Mochida’s vocals have some zeal to compliment the bright piano chords and percussion. I could see the musical direction that Mochida is going with her solo material and I honestly don’t have a problem with it. This is pleasant, relaxing pop and you get much more of it on her debut album moka.

The single includes a cover of the popular American classic MOON RIVER, which has been covered by countless artists. Mochida’s version is performed with an acoustic guitar and I thought her English singing was alright. The acoustics create this “Italian gondola” vibe so I thought that was nice. In terms of other J-pop artists, I liked her version more than Ken Hirai’s. lol

Overall Rating

3½ stars
