The cover of the CD only edition

to Mother is YUI’s 17th single and it was released on June 2, 2010. The single reached #1 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and sold 71,804 copies.

COINCIDENCE? I think not! I guess her and Angela traded instruments. lol

to Mother just makes you want to go “Awwwww”. It’s a sweet and sentimental song that describes the relationship between her and her mother. There are some moody moments in the lyrics but they’re mostly full of gratitude. As for the music, the song is piano driven with no acoustics (a first for YUI). The airy mid-tempo arrangement is very pleasant and flows nicely as well.

The B-side pushes the piano aside and rushes in with aggressive electric guitars. Less than 3 minutes long, Tonight is a sleek and collected track that reminds me of Jam (one of her older B-sides from 2007). This song is much better than Jam though.

And lastly there’s an acoustic version of GLORIA, which was already really acoustic in the first place. I guess you can call this a ~SUPER~ acoustic version since it adds piano.

Pros: The single is a grower for sure. to Mother is her most personal song since TOKYO.
Cons: As much as I love GLORIA, the super acoustic version was not needed.

BASICALLY…it would be cool to hear more piano tunes from her.

  1. I agree that the acoustic GLORIA was unnecessary, but acoustic songs are staples of YUI singles, so I knew it was gonna be on there.

  2. Sounds like a good single! I should give it a listen, especially since I really love TOKYO.

  3. those acoustic versions are just filler songs, but i liked the single anyway

  4. i agree ~YUI Acoustic Version~ has now becom a classic need or something of the sort. i always get excited when she releases a single cause then the next single will have its acoustic version. like to Mother ~YUI Acoustic Version~ is going to be awesome because it will be just YUI’s voice and the piano. that right there sounds awesome to me even if the song sounds acoustic already.

  5. It depends. You didn’t see TOKYO or Namidairo get acoustic versions.

yeah i though that too at first but YUI wanted to do an acoustic version of laugh away for the SUMMER SONG single instead. there cant be 2 version, i think. and TOKYO, the single after that was Good-bye days which was also used as a single to promote/go with the movie Taiyou no Uta. so it would be wierd to have movie songs there and then all of a sudden a random acoustic version is there. the people who have only seen the movie know nothing of her previous singles so why have an acoustic version and just make it for the movie
